Comeback Fighter, Charity Ambassador & Training Hero in Bad Waltersdorf
In the 2-Thermal Spa Region Bad Waltersdorf, one of the greatest local ultracyclists is preparing for his big comeback: Thomas Mauerhofer. The exceptional athlete has chosen Bad Waltersdorf as his home base – and for good reason: The diverse roads, the mild thermal climate, and the perfect blend of training and recovery make our region the ideal base for intense road cycling sessions and highly professional preparation.
From a Tragic Blow to a Comeback Plan
Thomas Mauerhofer is among the international elite in ultracycling – a discipline that demands exceptional endurance, mental strength, and uncompromising determination. Already in 2018, he participated in the legendary Race Across America (RAAM) – a race considered one of the toughest cycling events in the world. At that time, he was sensationally on track for a podium finish until a severe accident stopped him: A car driver ignored a traffic light, and Mauerhofer was hit head-on at full speed. He suffered a fracture of the sixth cervical vertebra and severe contusions – an injury that could have meant the end of any athletic career.
But Thomas wouldn’t be Thomas if he had given up. After intensive rehabilitation, countless training sessions, and an unbroken will, he will return to the big RAAM stage in 2026 – stronger and more focused than ever. The 2-Thermal Spa Region Bad Waltersdorf serves as the center of his training and a place where many of his toughest sessions – and mental preparations – take place.
Stronger Together – Charity for Children’s Cancer Aid with the Edlseer
Beyond athletic challenges, Thomas Mauerhofer is also committed to a good cause. Together with the music group Die Edlseer, he has launched a special cooperation: For Children’s Cancer Aid, he will start a special campaign in April – cycling after every Edlseer performance, starting from Bad Waltersdorf. This initiative combines athletic performance with social responsibility and clearly shows that cycling can be more than just competition.
A highlight of this charity cooperation will be the big charity race at the Thermal Spa Festival in September, where Mauerhofer will start alongside many supporters – for children who need all the help they can get.
Why Bad Waltersdorf is his chosen home base
Bad Waltersdorf offers Thomas and his team exactly the mix that professionals seek:
- Top road networks and diverse training routes – from flat sections to hilly passages
- Perfect recovery after tough sessions through thermal spas, wellness & active recreation
- Central location for training rides in all directions
- Road cycling community and infrastructure on site
Thomas deliberately chose this region to specifically prepare for RAAM and other major challenges.
A Role Model – Not Just on the Bike
Thomas Mauerhofer stands for more than just fast riding and athletic success. His story is an inspiration: from a tragic blow of fate, through the difficult path of recovery, to a comeback that instills courage and motivates. And with his charity cooperation with the Edlseer, he goes a step further – actively advocating for those whom we, as a society, should particularly support.
