Comeback Fighter, Charity Ambassador & Training Hero in Bad Waltersdorf

In the 2-spa region of Bad Waltersdorf, one of Austria’s greatest ultra-cyclists is preparing for his big comeback: Thomas Mauerhofer. The exceptional athlete has chosen Bad Waltersdorf as his home base – and for good reason: the varied roads, the mild spa climate and the perfect balance of training and recovery make our region the ideal base for intensive road cycling sessions and top-level preparation.

From a Tragic Blow to a Comeback Plan

Thomas Mauerhofer is among the international elite in ultra-cycling – a discipline that demands extraordinary endurance, mental strength and uncompromising determination. Back in 2018, he competed in the legendary Race Across America (RAAM) – a race considered one of the toughest cycling events in the world. At the time, he was sensationally on course for the podium until a serious accident stopped him: a driver ran a red light and Mauerhofer was hit head-on at full speed. He suffered a fracture of the sixth cervical vertebra and severe bruising – an injury that could have meant the end of any sporting career.

But Thomas wouldn’t be Thomas if he had given up. After intensive rehab, countless training sessions and unwavering determination, he will return to the big RAAM stage in 2026 – stronger and more focused than ever. The 2-spa region of Bad Waltersdorf serves as the hub of his training and the place where many of his toughest sessions – and mental preparations – take place.

Stronger Together – Charity for Children’s Cancer Aid with the Edlseer

Away from the sporting challenges, Thomas Mauerhofer is also committed to a good cause. Together with the music group Die Edlseer, he has launched a special partnership: for Children’s Cancer Aid, he will set off on a special campaign in April – riding his road bike after every Edlseer performance, starting from Bad Waltersdorf. This initiative combines athletic performance with social responsibility and clearly shows that cycling can be more than pure competition.

A highlight of this charity cooperation will be the big charity race at the Thermal Spa Festival in September, where Mauerhofer will start alongside many supporters – for children who need all the help they can get.

Why Bad Waltersdorf is his chosen home base

Bad Waltersdorf offers Thomas and his team exactly the mix that professionals seek:

  • Top road networks and diverse training routes – from flat sections to hilly passages
  • Perfect recovery after tough sessions through thermal spas, wellness & active recreation
  • Central location for training rides in all directions
  • Road cycling community and infrastructure on site
Thomas deliberately chose this region to specifically prepare for RAAM and other major challenges.

A Role Model – Not Just on the Bike

Thomas Mauerhofer stands for more than speed and sporting success. His story is an inspiration: from a hard blow of fate, through the difficult road back, to a comeback that gives courage and motivates. And with his charity partnership with Die Edlseer, he goes one step further – actively supporting those who, as a society, we should stand by the most.
